When contemplating the qualities of the Hobey Baker award, Willem immediately comes to mind. It is the variety of little things that he does that makes him the amazing human being he is. I can recall the countless volunteer hours he has committed to helping others in our hockey program, and constantly upholds the values of honesty and integrity in all of his affairs. The most important thing to know about Willem is how much he cares about his community and those around him. It is without fail that when a volunteer is needed, WIllem is front and center to help. As a player he is highly coachable and consistent in giving his full efforts. Willem can be counted on to work hard in practice and give his max effort in games, all while being a consummate teammate. His love for his team mates and desire to see the team succeed is evident in everything that he does. Willem has a strong academic commitment and success record, as well as participation in leadership endeavors. This young man is extremely well adjusted and always budgeting his time correctly to find success and all that he does. His maturity and ability to plan and execute is far beyond his years. Willem, as a person, is a rarity in today’s environment- his morals, work ethic, the way he treats others, his outlook on the world, and his personality have made him one of my favorite kids I have coached over the last 15 years.
