HOBEY BAKER AWARD – Ruby Ryan

A hockey player with Hobey Baker characteristics is an athlete who excels both on and off the ice. They are known for their skill, versatility, and high hockey IQ. They combine skills, speed, agility, and vision to create scoring opportunities for their teammates while limiting scoring opportunities of opponents. This type of player demonstrates resilience and determination to reach the pinnacle of success. Despite setbacks, this type of player works tirelessly to become a top player for their team. Their leadership is evident in the way they inspire teammates and elevate the play of those around them. Off the ice, they exemplify strong character, sportsmanship, and a dedication to academics or personal development, making them a well-rounded individual who positively influences people, situations, and organizations. This combination of athletic excellence, perseverance, and integrity truly embodies the spirit of the Hobey Baker Award.

After a devastating injury that sidelined Ruby Ryan for an entire season, Ruby came back to overcome the injury both physically and mentally. She chose to rebuild herself, learn about herself, and truly know what it means to cherish every moment. She developed a renewed passion for the game and take nothing for granted. Through her relentless work ethic and an unwavering commitment to development, she not only regained her former self but elevated her game to new heights. Not only did she make the varsity hockey team, she became a top player on one of the premier teams in the state of Minnesota. This was not through natural talent alone, but by pushing herself day in and day out, honing her skills, continuously striving to improve while learning to mentally choose herself and believe in herself daily. Despite her rise to prominence, Ruby doesn’t play for individual accolades or recognition; instead, her love for the sport is rooted in the pure joy it brings her. This is evident by the smile that is vividly seen and often seen while in both practices and games. When on the ice, her focus isn’t on personal glory, but on lifting her teammates, encouraging their growth, and making sure they succeed together. Ruby’s selflessness is evident in every pass and every moment spent helping others improve. She’s the type of player who inspires those around her simply by showing up, doing the work, and playing because it’s what she loves. This combination of athletic excellence, perseverance to overcome, integrity while walking in her faith truly embodies the spirit of the Hobey Baker Award. We are grateful for her example and leadership on the ice, in the classroom, and as a person of faith.
