There are many things that stand out about Leila. She is smart, on and off the ice, in and out of the classroom. She never fails to support her teammates. There are certain players who you know worked to the edge of their abilities every shift by the way they come back to the bench and Leila is one of them. She is the kind of skilled, shutdown defense that every good team needs. There is a story that sticks in my mind about her, though, that shows everything you need to know about her character. Before practice we were chatting about her AP US history class. I asked her about a court case. She hesitated for a moment, but had some things to say. She goes to get ready for practice, as do I. Fifteen minutes later, we’re on the ice for practice, she comes skating up to me. “Okay, I looked it up and here’s the deal!” She proceeds to talk my ear off for 5 minutes about the case. I ask her “wait, you went to the locker room and looked up the case.” She says yes to me as though she’s confused because of *course* that’s what you do. The follow up, the attention to detail, the humility and kindness, the need to get it right, the desire to be excellent, I saw all these things in Lelia that day, as I do every day. It’s hard to beat that kind of character.
