Every successful team has their share of star players. Some of those players light up that stat sheet and others are the reason their teammates light up the stat sheet. Jake joined our team as as one of seven freshman. That season was the beginning of what was to be an extremely solid four years, and this incoming freshman class was to be the catalyst. Jake didn’t immediately become a seasoned high school player. His intensity and confidence needed time to grow. At one point, early on in his career, his confidence hit a low point and we decided to make a move to help take some pressure off of him. We switched him from defense to forward. The difference was immediate and right away, his focus and hustle started to shine through. Unfortunately just as he was starting to rise, the injury bug hit and he was sidelined. He continued to put the work in, recovered and completed his transformation into one of the most reliable players and an invaluable asset with his hustle, work ethic and confidence. Off the ice he’s quiet, humble and an excellent teammate to everyone in the locker room. On a team with so many potential nominees for this award, it truly shows what a fantastic player and person he is. I’m pleased to nominate Jake Stehnacs for the Hobey Baker High School Character Award.
