I am pleased to nominate Cameron Shure for the 2025 Hobey Baker High School Character Award. Cameron’s high school career demonstrates the values of character, commitment, sportsmanship, and a true love for the game, which align with the spirit of this award.
1. Commitment to Excellence
Cameron’s dedication to hockey has been unwavering throughout his high school career. As a four-year member of the Winston Churchill Varsity Hockey Club, he has excelled in one of the most demanding positions on the ice: Goalie. His commitment to excellence in sports, academics, and all areas of his life is evident in so many ways: In 2002, Cameron helped his hockey team win the Maryland Student High School League (MSHL) State Championship, and the lacrosse team win the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA) 4A boys lacrosse state championship; in 2023 he helped his hockey team advance to the MSHL State Championships, was ranked the number 1 goalie in on the MSHL with a .090 save percentage, and selected as a Montgomery Hockey Conference Second Team All-Conference player; and this past 2024-25 season, Cameron helped his team win the Montgomery County High School Conference Championship.
Cameron’s commitment extends far beyond the rink. Whether waking up before dawn for 5:30am hockey practices before school, hitting the practice field right after school, or attending late night games, he consistently arrives with enthusiasm, respect for his coaches and teammates, and a relentless desire to improve. His dedication is fueled by his deep love for competition, camaraderie and his respect for the values it instills in him: discipline, hard work, and perseverance.
2. Work Ethic and Leadership
Cameron’s work ethic is evident in his ability to balance a demanding sports schedule with other responsibilities. In addition to his athletic commitments, Cameron tutors underserved elementary students, coaches youth sports, and works part-time at a local golf course, demonstrating excellent time management skills and a strong commitment to his community.
As a leader, Cameron leads by example. His coachability and willingness to do whatever is needed for the team’s success are qualities that set him apart. He fosters a positive environment within the team, making players of all skill levels feel valued and supported. His leadership was recognized with the Paul McKenzie Sportsmanship First Award and the Winston Churchill Hockey Club Coaches’ Award.
3. Sportsmanship and Teamwork
Cameron is a strong believer in the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship. He consistently prioritizes the success of the team and maintains a positive, respectful attitude both on and off the ice. His interactions with teammates, coaches, and opponents reflect the respect he holds for the game and for others. Cameron also contributes to the hockey community through his work managing the team’s social media accounts, keeping fans connected and informed.
4. Excellence in Academics
Cameron’s dedication is not limited to hockey. He has been named to the MSHL Academic Honor Roll for all four years of high school and has excelled in a challenging academic program, including AP Literature, AP Psychology, AP Calculus, and AP Statistics. His academic achievements reflect the same commitment and discipline he applies to hockey.
Conclusion
Cameron Shure is a deserving candidate for the 2025 Hobey Baker High School Character Award. His commitment to the sport, work ethic, sportsmanship, and leadership both on and off the ice make him an excellent representative of the values the Hobey Baker Award celebrates. Cameron’s contributions to his team, his community, and his school exemplify the principles of this award.
