Countdown to Hobey:

Brock Olenick

2025 | Florida | COED

Cypress Bay Lightning | Lightning | COED

Brock Olenick was chosen as our Hobey Baker award recipient because he embodies all the characteristics that are considered by the coaches when selecting the recipient for our team.
Brock Olenick is the type of teammate we all hope to have and wish we could be. He has the respect of his teammates as a leader and as a player. He is dedicated to his craft and has dedicated hours upon hours to reach his current level of play. Brock is fairly new to the sport of hockey. For much of his youth he was a soccer player but decided to pursue hockey as his sport of choice in his sophomore year of high school. He transitioned from soccer to hockey and completely immersed himself in becoming the best goalie he could be. Countless lessons, Saturday morning stick and puck, practices with his older brother Maddox and always willing to volunteer at games and clinics… as many hours as he could get on the ice so he could get to be as good as he is today. He plays goalie for the Lighting and for the 18U AA Fury. His work ethic on the ice is unparalleled. He is a team player though and through. He is inclusive of all his teammates, encouraging them and pushing them to be better. When he is not in net, he is happy to put on his player gear and jump into the game to give his starting line a reprieve when they need a shift change.
Brock excels in the classroom just as he excels on the ice. He has an impressive 4.4 GPA and takes advanced classes at Cypress Bay High School. His college plans have not been solidified, though he has been accepted to several Florida State Universities. He is also a 3-year member of the FPHSL Leadership Academy.
Brock is outstanding at putting together film for the team to review or highlight reels for his teammates. Brock keeps his team up to date on the competition. He researches the teams they play, oftentimes watching their games to give teammates an accurate assessment of how the competition matches up. During tournament play he is the first to analyze the standings and the different permutations that might lead to a team victory.
Brock is humble and unassuming. He has a clever dry wit. You will never hear Brock brag about his performance in a game. He is the first to pump up his teammates and encourage them to do more. He always shows good sportsmanship, no matter the circumstances. Another notable detail about Brock is that many of his teammates play on different travel teams. He takes the time to come out on weekends, when he isn’t playing, to watch them in person and cheer them on.
This season alone he has logged over 500 minutes in net.
