Victor Heyliger (September 26, 1912 – October 4, 2006) was honored as the 1982 recipient of the Hobey Baker Legends of College Hockey Award, recognizing his profound impact on collegiate ice hockey. As head coach of the University of Michigan from 1944 to 1957, Heyliger led the Wolverines to six NCAA championships, including the inaugural title in 1948. His teams made ten consecutive Frozen Four appearances, a record that remains unmatched. Heyliger’s innovative coaching and commitment to excellence not only brought national prominence to Michigan’s program but also helped elevate the stature of college hockey across the United States. His legacy is further cemented by his induction into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in 1974 and the University of Michigan Athletic Hall of Honor in 1980.
