Max Bloomfield exemplifies all the characteristics for which the Hoby Baker High School character award is presented. He is a member of the National Honor Society and has completed 11 hours of AP/IB classes. He carries a senior year GPA of 4.23, and he has earned first team all-academic honors for the past 4 years in our Capital Hockey Conference. His teachers have praised his positive attitude, one mentioning “he is engaged, intuitive and inquisitive with a great work ethic. He is affable and most respectful”. Another teacher comments, “Max is a wonderful student who is open minded, caring, and respectful. Participating positivity in class discussions and often takes on a leadership role when working in teams”. At Upper Arlington High School, Max is a member of the Spirit Club, a team leader in the Wharton Global High School Investment Competition, and a member of the Operation Smile Club.
In the community Max is involved in several projects including Pilot Dogs which helps train service dogs for the blind, The Mirolo Charitable Foundation to help secure grants for service projects. Coaching kids who must utilize a sled to play hockey for Ohio Sled Hockey, and coaching kids with developmental disabilities for the Columbus Special Hockey Club. He is the chairman of the Upper Arlington Hockey annual toy drive for Nationwide Children’s Hospital and is a mentor to elementary school kids who participate in The Future Ice Bears of Upper Arlington.
On the ice Max is an example of effort and leadership. His head coach said “Max is a wonderful young man who has given everything he can to the UA hockey program, exemplifying leadership all four years, and gives consistent effort at all times.” Coach Hagkull has praised Max for his “community involvement and has left our hockey program in a better place than when he found it.”
In 2024 Max was awarded the Sherman Sportsmanship award for his outstanding example of fair play, playing a complete 200 FT game with a minimum of penalty minutes. His teammates voted for him to be named captain for both his Junior and Senior year, which was wholeheartedly supported by the coaching staff.
As his senior hockey season winds down, Max has been an outstanding model of leadership on and off the ice and has contributed to the legacy of an outstanding hockey program. Max’s presence and character will be missed by his coaches and teammates. The coaching staff believes Max Bloomfield meets and exceeds all of the Hobey Baker criteria of character, sportsmanship, citizenship, teamwork, and academics, Max is the most deserving of the 2025 Upper Arlington Hobey Baker High School Character Award.
